The Bicultural Studies Programme was launched five years ago to groom a core group of bilingual Singaporeans who can engage both China and the West. The pioneering batch who underwent the programme from Secondary 3 to junior college are now in their first year of university. How did they fare? What were the results? Here's the report card.
WHEN Ms Tseng Xin Ying visited Beijing University in 2007 as part of the Education Ministry's Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP), she was amazed by the sight of people reading in every nook and cranny on the campus.
Many students were so deeply engrossed in their books by the picturesque Weiming lake that they did not realise they were attracting a tourist's attention.
Then 17, the young Singaporean was so impressed that she decided to apply to study Chinese language and literature and international relations there.
"I wanted to go to a university with a conducive atmosphere, so I decided that this was it," said the former Dunman High School student.
She is one of the more than 300 pioneering students who have graduated from the BSP programme and are now in their first year of university, studying a range of subjects here and abroad.
Running from Secondary 3 to the second year of junior college, the BSP aims to groom a core group of bilingual students who can understand and engage China as well as the West.
Launched in Hwa Chong Institution, Dunman High and Nanyang Girls' High in 2005, the BSP attracts an average of 330 students each year. River Valley High School also started offering the programme in 2007.
BSP students cover an intensive curriculum in the Chinese language, culture and literature. Some go overseas for lengthy immersion trips, spending up to six months in China.
The most outstanding students from each cohort are offered the BSP scholarship, which provides an allowance of $1,000 a year. Scholarship holders make up a third of the 300 or so students every year.
The scholarship holders have to take China Studies in Chinese at the H2 level, which is roughly equivalent to the A levels. They are heavily subsidised for two overseas immersion programmes, one lasting two to six months in China and the other, two weeks in another country.
A Straits Times check with the three schools which started the scheme found that many BSP graduates are now in fields like law, medicine and economics.
At first glance, the disciplines seem totally unrelated to the Chinese language, history or culture. But the students interviewed said they were positive about the many opportunities offered by the programme.
The most popular course with Hwa Chong's first batch was medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with 10 students, or one-eighth of the cohort, pursuing it. The next three most popular courses were business, international relations and law.
Mr Branden Seow Zi Xuan, 19, a former Hwa Chong student, had dreamt of becoming a doctor since childhood. But he also wanted to know more about Chinese culture and contemporary China.
When the opportunity came, he realised that he could take China Studies at H2 level, along with chemistry, biology and mathematics, which would enable him to apply to medical school at NUS.
Having travelled to Zhejiang, Beijing, Shanghai and Hainan under the BSP, he felt his experiences in China will enable him to establish a better rapport with Chinese patients in the future.
"I will ask my patient which part of China he comes from. Then I will know what to ask, to strike up a conversation and generate goodwill," said Mr Seow, who is now studying medicine at NUS.
"It's still early, but I'm keeping an open mind. If Chinese patients were to come to Singapore, I can help in managing their care as I believe I will be able to establish a rapport with them."
The 62 pioneering students from Nanyang Girls' are studying a range of subjects from international relations, science and medicine to economics, accountancy and business, and law. Dunman High's 124 students are also pursuing a similar range of subjects here and abroad.
Said Ms Tan Mei Hui, 19, a former Dunman High student who is now pursuing a Bachelor of Music at the Royal College of Music in London: "Although the BSP did not have a direct influence on my decision to study music in Britain, it has further enhanced my ability to appreciate the beauty of other cultures."
She added that the BSP helped make students more appreciative of other cultures, and more socially conscious.
Evaluating the programme
AS THE pioneering students are barely in their first year of university, it is too early to evaluate the results of the BSP programme.
But if one goes by the popularity of the programme, academic honours awarded to students and tie-ups with Chinese universities, the results have been gratifying.
Since 2005, an average of 330 students have been selected for the BSP each year, with numbers fluctuating between years.
For Dunman High's BSP, more students are applying for the 80 to 100 spots – from about 100 in 2007 to 120 this year, according to Dr Ong Chun Ghee, head of the bicultural studies academy at the school.
The quality of students has also risen, he noted: "We observe that students with better results are applying for the programme, with more parents inquiring."
Students interviewed said they will recommend the programme to their peers because it provides a well-rounded education and overseas immersion.
But Ms Serene Lim Si Ling, 19, who is studying Chinese language and literature at Fudan University, had this piece of advice: "Students should have an open mind to accept the differences so that they can really learn from the experiences, no matter good or bad."
Meanwhile, Ms Choo Wen Rui, 19. warned that students should join the BSP out of "true interest".
Said the Nanyang Technological University undergraduate, who is studying biomedical sciences and Chinese medicine: "If you're attracted only by the overseas immersion programme, you might struggle if you're not interested in Chinese culture, especially in junior college, when you have to do a lot of reading for the China Studies class."
One positive result of the programme: The Prime Minister's Book Prize, awarded for bilingual excellence, has been given to seven BSP students – five from Hwa Chong and two from Dunman High.
BSP students have also demonstrated their mettle by winning scholarships to universities here and abroad, especially in China.
Hwa Chong principal Ang Wee Hiong expects many of his students to qualify for public scholarships as well as those offered by private companies with business interests in China.
"In time, many will become industry leaders in areas such as journalism, broadcasting, business, teaching and academia," he said.
Indeed, the numbers are looking up for Hwa Chong, where 34 of the 80 students in its graduating BSP batch have been awarded overseas scholarships to top institutions such as China's Beijing and Fudan universities, Britain's Oxford University and American Ivy League colleges like Dartmouth and the University of Pennsylvania.
Another important indicator would be the amount of time students spend in China, noted Chinese language expert Chua Chee Lay, who is one of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's Chinese language tutors.
It is through cultural immersion that students understand how the Chinese think, said Dr Chua, who is chief executive of Chinese language and culture research and training centre CL Lab.
One student who stood out is Ms Tan Bao Jia, 19, from Dunman High, one of the six President's Scholarship winners this year.
Bucking the trend of her predecessors who went to big-name British and American universities, she decided to study economics at Beijing University.
She joins nine former Dunman High students in her batch who are now studying in China's Fudan and Beijing universities.
In the last two years, both Hwa Chong and Dunman High have announced tie-ups which allow students to study at prestigious Chinese universities like Beijing, Fudan and Qinghua.
However, while academic results indicate how well a student understands the Chinese language, culture and history, Dr Chua cautioned that these are not enough.
"Students should have a deeper understanding of the culture they are studying, and to absorb it, make it part of their lives. That is real education," he said.
"The highest level of evaluation is to see if students can internalise what they have learnt."
Citing an example from the epic novel Journey To The West, one of the "Four Classics" that capture the essence of Chinese culture, Dr Chua noted that the main character Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is a skilled and strong fighter.
It would be good if a student can pick out the strong and weak points from the story and apply what he knows to real-life situations, he said.
"A person may have a weak personality and often run away from difficulties. But he can be inspired by the Monkey King's fighting spirit, such that he develops a strong will, stops running away and changes for the better, thereby improving his life."

德明政府中学中国大学保送计划详情
德明政府中学于2008年和中国上海顶尖学府复旦大学签署《中国复旦大学——新加坡德明政府中学第一项合作备忘录》，成为复旦大学“21世纪海外精英人才本科留学项目”在新加坡重点推广的学校之一，是与中国复旦大学合作的第一间新加坡高中学校。
该项目允许非中国籍的德明政府中学高中毕业生，在参加新加坡剑桥高级水准考试后，成绩若达到新加坡国立大学同类科系的录取标准，则可以获得保送资格，免试进入复旦大学文科院系学习；如果要进入复旦大学理科院系学习，需要加试数学。

历届总统奖学金得主一般都到欧美留学，德明政府中学直通车毕业生陈葆佳（19岁）却与众不同，选择到中国深造。她也是今年首批中国奖学金得主之一，她将赴北京大学攻读经济，立志成为一名“中国通”公务员。
陈葆佳热爱中华历史与文化，在德明选修双文化课程时，对中国社会、政治等产生浓厚兴趣。在决定到中国念书时，她已确认自己未来的方向，也很清楚自己要扮演的角色。
她说：“因为我要加入政府部门，而政府部门现在需要更多了解中国国情的公务员。新中之间有密切的经贸往来，未来有更多合作的机会，我选修经济就是想从经济学方面了解中国的观点，以后更容易取得双赢和找到合作机会。”
陈葆佳希望为社会作出贡献，而制定政策的公务员对人民生活的影响最大，因此她愿意加入公共部门。
抱着这一信念，陈葆佳今年初毕业后主动到淡滨尼北参与议员接见选民的服务，以深入了解民间的问题。她笑说，自己当时穿着T恤短裤到住家附近的接见选民办事处表明自己有兴趣帮忙，没有通过朋友或学校介绍，连工作人员也感有些意外。几个月下来，陈葆佳对小市民面对的问题有更深一层的了解。
她举例说，一对带着四个念小学孩子的夫妇曾要求她帮忙写信给国家公园局，让他们一家继续在樟宜海边扎营，让她感触很深，因为自己经常到海边去，从没想过那些在海边扎营的人可能是在那里长期居住，没有栖身之所。
“我才发现新加坡真的有人连基本生活都成问题。但是要帮助他们其实得从多方面进行，包括教他们如何存钱，联络其他部门如建屋发展局或社区发展理事会帮忙等。新加坡其实有很多不同援助计划，但多数国人并不了解，而我自己以前也不知道。”

Scholar heads for China

IN A break from tradition, one of this year's President's Scholars will be going to university in China - the first to do so.
All the previous winners of Singapore's most prestigious scholarship have gone mainly to Ivy League schools in the United States, or to top British universities.
Piqued by her interest in the 'Chinese psyche', Miss Tan Bao Jia, 19, picked Peking University over the Wharton School in the United States.
The former Dunman High School student council president is from the first batch of PSC China scholars, a new category of scholarships introduced this year.
But it was not smooth sailing all the way for her. She admitted with a laugh that at one point she had second thoughts about doing Chinese Language and Literature, as well as China Studies, at the A-level standard.
Miss Tan, who speaks English, Mandarin and Hokkien with her father, a shipping manager, and mother, a housewife, found the first few months tough going.
'It was harder than I thought it would be to love the subject,' she said of Chinese literature. ' But the teachers helped, and I grew to love some of the China writers.'
Among her favourites: major 20th-century writers Lu Xun and Lao She.
The avid trekker, who also enjoys solving Sudoku puzzles, is the eldest of three girls. Her younger sisters are at Tanjong Katong Girls' School and Victoria Junior College.
She will study economics, and believes that Singapore will benefit from having people who understand Chinese culture first-hand and how the country operates.
Being part of Dunman High's pioneer batch of integrated programme graduands, she had a taste of life in China – having spent five months there under the school's bicultural studies programme.
Dunman High principal Sng Chern Wei, a President's Scholar himself, told The Straits Times that the teachers at Peking University and other top Chinese universities were top-grade teachers.
"It is just as exciting and vibrant as in Ivy League or Oxbridge schools," he said.
Mr Sng said Miss Tan, who entered Dunman High as a very shy student, "has really blossomed into a very articulate young lady".
Miss Tan and the five other President's Scholars this year were picked from a pool of 87 PSC scholars.
They were presented their scholarship awards by President S R Nathan at an Istana ceremony yesterday.
Mr Nathan called on the six to not just excel in their studies but to also be active in community work and help the less fortunate. This would help them to understand the concerns of ordinary people when they return to Singapore.

1. We would like to share with you our joy that the pioneer batch of DHP graduates have done very well in securing scholarships for their tertiary education.
2. Many of you would already have read in the press that one of our DHP graduates, Mr Wong Keng Hoe, has been awarded the prestigious Singapore Police Force Overseas Scholarship to read Economics in the University of Chicago.
3. Another student from our DHP graduates, Miss Tan Baojia, has been awarded the prestigious President's Scholarship to read Economics in Peking University. She was also offered a place by the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania but she decided to give that up for the opportunity to learn in the top university of a rapidly growing China.
4. To have nurtured a President's Scholar and a SPF Overseas Scholar with our very first batch of DHP graduates is an achievement that has brought immense joy and pride to our school community. It speaks volume of the rigour and quality of our Integrated Programme.
5. Together with Baojia and Keng Hoe, 21% of our DHP graduates have secured scholarships/awards to pursue their tertiary education. This proportion will grow ever further as many of our male graduates who are currently in National Service would only firm up their tertiary plan towards the end of their National Service.
6. In celebration of these achievements, we have decided to declare a school holiday on 20 Aug 2009 (Thur). On that day, students do not need to attend school for lessons. However, if they have commitments that are beyond school level (e.g. competitions or 3rd Language classes), they must still honour those commitments.

三人获今年警察海外奖学金

黄敬豪从小学开始就参加童军，从中掌握各项求生技能，也领悟协助他人的意义。他和警员接触后，看见他们通过不同形式帮助 基层人民，就知道这是他所想要的工作。
最终，他以优异的学术成绩和亮眼的活动表现，得到今年的警察海外奖学金，下个月将赴美国芝加哥大学读经济。
警察部队今年共颁发三份海外奖学金，除了德明政府中学直通车高中部毕业生的黄敬豪，另外两名19岁的奖学金得主分别是莱佛士初院毕业生欧阳国光和王为安。
副总理兼内政部长黄根成昨天在总统府颁奖。
黄敬豪是德明政府中学直通车计划的首批毕业生之一。除了学业成绩优异，他曾获得警察部队的初院书卷奖（SPF JC Book Prize ），同时也积极参加童军、醒师团、足球等团队和纪律活动。
他说：“警察部队讲求诚、信、勇、忠，这也是我的母校德明政府中学的校训，这个信念和精神对我来说已根深蒂固，推动着我在拿到奖学金后，要更积极地为社会服务。”
另一名得主王为安则将动身前往英国修读生物化学，他原考虑当一名科学家，但在参与内政部队的实习计划，实际了解了内政团队的运作和工作使命，让他有了新的启发。
他从服务多年的资深警员分享经验中，察觉他们即使每天重复一样的工作内容和形式。但他们都竭尽全力地去协助无助的市民，从他们的笑容中，他可以体会警员在助人之后所得到的满足感，那是无法以金钱衡量的。他说：“公共服务能改善人民生活，为人民解决问题，是一份有实际意义的工作，此外，我从小就对成龙的警匪片感兴趣，所以毅然选择加入警察部队，日后可除暴安良。”
欧阳国光在学校创办了人文科学计划（Hu-manities Initiative），率领同学筹办活动为大巴窑的年长者筹款。他从中了解目前的各项措施尚有需要改进的空间，才能更有效 的把援助计划直接落在年长者身上。
对国际关系和国家治理有兴趣的他，将到美国耶鲁大学修读道德、经济与政治系，希望在投身警队后，能帮助社会上不幸的一群逐渐摆脱困境。

他从服务多年的资深警员分享经验中，察觉他们即使每天重复一样的工作内容和形式。但他们都竭尽全力地去协助无助的市民，从他们的笑容中，他可以体会警员在助人之后所得到的满足感，那是无法以金钱衡量的。他说：“公共服务能改善人民生活，为人民解决问题，是一份有实际意义的工作，此外，我从小就对成龙的警匪片感兴趣，所以毅然选择加入警察部队，日后可除暴安良。”
欧阳国光在学校创办了人文科学计划（Hu-manities Initiative），率领同学筹办活动为大巴窑的年长者筹款。他从中了解目前的各项措施尚有需要改进的空间，才能更有效 的把援助计划直接落在年长者身上。
对国际关系和国家治理有兴趣的他，将到美国耶鲁大学修读道德、经济与政治系，希望在投身警队后，能帮助社会上不幸的一群逐渐摆脱困境。
Overseas scholarship trio all set for police career

THREE young men took their first step towards careers in the police force yesterday by formally accepting the Singapore Police Force Overseas Scholarship.

He will read biochemistry at University College London.
Mr Au Yong will study ethics, politics and economics at Yale; Mr Wong will take up economics at the University of Chicago.

更多教育学院优秀生 明年将获赞助深造

教育部将从明年起，赞助更多学业表现出色的教学奖学金得主，以及新加坡国立教育学院本科毕业生修读硕士课程，让他们在考获学位后马上继续深造。每年估计将有至少多50名本科生，能够获 得教育部的赞助，修读硕士学位。
教育部长黄永宏昨天在教育部奖学金颁奖典礼上致词时，宣布这消息。
目前，只有少数学业成绩出色的教育部奖学金得主能够获得硕士课程赞助。今年，有16名教学奖学金得主获得教育部硕士学位赞助。
不过，从明年起，完成国立教育学院学士学位课程，并且获得一等荣誉学位的学生，也可在毕业后马上申请教育部硕士学位赞助，在本地或海外大学修读硕士课程。
以优秀成绩完成大学毕业教育专业文凭课程（Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programme）的毕业生，则可在执教两年后申请硕士赞助。
今年共有420名学生获得教育部奖学金，是教育部自2003年开始颁发教学奖学金以来人数最多的一次，申请人数也比去年多。
今年的奖学金得主将到本地与英国、美国、中国、德国、日本与法国大学深造，当中共有26人将修读美术及音乐，比去年的22名稍微增加。
奖学金得主当中，有59人参与了教育部去年推出的教学实习计划。
教育部是在去年开始为有兴趣加入教学行列的A水准毕业生推出教学实习计划，让他们在学校实习至少4个星期，更了解在学校教书的情况。
黄永宏说，实习计划能够帮助奖学金申请者更了解教学行业，教育部希望在2015年时，所有奖学金得主在深造之前都能先参与实习计划。
德明政府中学直通车计划毕业生陈美慧（19岁），就是在母校实习教导音乐两个月后，才决定申请教育部教学金，到英国皇家音乐学院修读音乐。
她在A水准考获8科优等的佳绩，同时也被新加坡管理大学法律系录取，不过仍决定接受教育部的奖学金到英国去。
她从小热爱音乐，是音乐特选课程的学生，不过之前完全没有教学经验。她在实习时有机会教导音乐特选课程的学弟学妹，初次体验当教师的感觉。
她说：“看到学生有进步，满足感非常大。我也发现教师的工作不只包括教导，还需要办活动、带领学生等，需要领导能力、组织能力等技巧，有许多方面可以不断学习。”
将到国大修读中文系的关彦丽（19岁），则在参与实习计划时，在立才中学教导高级华文半年。她在实习时发现，许多学生修读高级华文只是为了进初院时有“优待分”，并不是真正对华文感兴趣。
她说：“刚开始会觉得有些失望，自己用心准备作业，他们却没有兴趣完成。”
不过，她并没有因此而放弃，反而更用心与学生建立关系，尝试激发他们学习华文的兴趣。
她说：“我发现只要老师认真地教，学生还是会感受到的。我希望能在大学时期更努力学习，往后能教得更好。”

3学生获颁 警队海外奖学金

警察部队今年颁发三份海外奖学金，给品学兼优、志在为人民和国家服务的有为青年。

德明和复旦在去年签署备忘录，让我校高中部学生能够申请免试保送到中国复旦大学继续大学本科课程。
由于第一届高中部同学优异成绩，复旦大学颁发了5份奖学金和6份免试名额给我校学生。今年，我校将有7 名同学在8月份赴中国上海，复旦大学深造。

Wanted: China-savvy civil servants

Miss Tan Bao Jia has stayed with a family in Nanjing and sat for a language examination in Sichuan.
She tasted these intimate slices of life in China as a student in Dunman High's bicultural programme.
For the next four years, Miss Tan, 19, will experience vastly more of China as an economics undergraduate at Peking University.
Yesterday, the young Singaporean was one of 10 winners of the Public Service Commission's (PSC) new China scholarship.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said at the PSC scholarship awards ceremony that Singapore must send more scholars to China who can then better understand the Chinese world.
He also announced a new overseas development programme to nurture China-savvy public servants.
This allows fresh school leavers and mid-career professionals to work for three to nine months in Singapore government offices in China or companies there.
They will return to do China-related work in the public service.
The focus on China is a recognition of its influence in the world and its relevance to Singapore, said the Prime Minister.
Bilateral ties are strong. Many Singapore companies operate all over the country.
Mr Lee said: "We need people who can understand the Chinese...be comfortable in their milieu, be able to read how they think, how they act."
These public servants should know some people in China personally and tap these ties for "mutual benefit", he added.
While the PSC has sent scholars to China since 1993, the numbers have been small.
But the effort to build bicultural and bilingual talent in secondary schools has been successful, noted Mr Lee.
Eight of the 10 China scholars rose from these programmes.
The 10 will spend four years as undergraduates in China, then pursue a master's degree anywhere in the world for two years.
Mr Lee gave out PSC scholarships to a record 87 students.
Of these, 38 will pursue their studies in Britain, and 24 in the United States.
The rest will study in China, Japan and Singapore.
In his speech at the Shangri-La Hotel, Mr Lee reminded the young people of Singapore's early scho-lars, who contributed vitally to the growth of the fledgling nation.
They transformed the economy, housed the nation, integrated the races, and more.
The new scholarship holders, too, can play a big part in totally transforming Singapore, he indicated.
So he urged them to experience the world – be it bonding with classmates from other nations or interning at firms during vacations.
They will gain different perspectives and fresh ideas to make Singapore better, he said.
Ms Tan, meanwhile, said she hoped to gain new understanding of Chinese ways, which include the use of guanxi or personal connections.
Singapore's links to China were also on the mind of China-born scholar Cao Lei, 21, who left Xian for Singapore 10 years ago.
She will study natural science at Britain's Cambridge University.
At her PSC scholarship interview in May, she told the panel that both China and Singapore are home to her.
"I believe both sides can benefit each other," said Ms Cao, who became a Singapore citizen last month and wants to be a new bridge.

这是他连续第二年把部分加薪捐出来设立教育奖项，另半数约50万元加薪则捐赠给多个社区、基层、艺术及福利团体。

李总理昨天在声明中说，他是在同教育部讨论之后，决定增设两项新的教育奖项，并决定把另外50万元捐给他去年捐款设立的捐赠基金，以使这个基金能够赚取足够的回报来资助所有四项奖项。他还表示打算在今后几年继续捐款，以让这个捐赠基金能逐年累积更多的金额。

我国越来越重视双文化人才，因此“李显龙杰出双文化学生奖”将特别表扬精通华文或马来文，能够同中国、本区域国家以及西方国家打交道的优秀生。每年将有两名成绩最优异的华英双文化课程（Bicultural Studies Programme, Chinese）学生和一名成绩最优异的区域学习课程（Regional Studies Programme）学生获奖，每人各得500元。区域学习课程是教育部为栽培能够以马来语或印尼语沟通，并且了解本区域社会与文化的学生而设。
这两项教育奖项的奖金都将来自以李总理的捐款成立的捐赠基金的利息收入。
李总理昨天在声明中说，他是在同教育部讨论之后，决定增设两项新的教育奖项，并决定把另外50万元捐给他去年捐款设立的捐赠基金，以使这个基金能够赚取足够的回报来资助所有四项奖项。他还表示打算在今后几年继续捐款，以让这个捐赠基金能逐年累积更多的金额。
他说：“在新加坡，教育是取得成功的重要关键。它让学生有机会学习技能和增长知识，为自己创造更美好的生活。我希望这些奖项能鼓励学生竭尽所能求上进，同时有助建立一个包容的教育制度，以孕育具有各种才华及能力的学生。”
李总理前年四月在国会上总结对部长及公务员薪金调整的辩论时指出，由于部长加薪的关键决定权是在他手上，为了让人民明白他是为了国家的前途而不是要让自己加薪而作出这个决定，他因此决定把个人五年的加薪悉数捐出。他去年所得到的加薪是104万元。
这是总理连续第二年把部分加薪捐出来设立教育奖项，另半数约50万元加薪则捐赠给多个社区、基层、艺术及福利团体。
教育部昨天在文告中说，李总理新设立的两项教育奖项是“李显龙多才能杰出成就奖”（Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement）及“李显龙杰出双文化学生奖”（Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding Bicultural Students）。

获国防优异奖学金 女生将赴北大深造

19岁的刘子瑄在A水准会考成绩出炉前虽已被5所英国大学录取，不过最终仍选择到北京大学修读国际关系。她是今年国防优异奖学金（Defence Merit Scholarship）得主之一，也是首名到中国留学的国防优异奖学金得主。
她说：“我对国与国之间的关系很感兴趣。中国在经济等各方面发展非常迅速，不过政治体系与我们完全不同。我想亲身体验，了解中国怎么看世界。”
刘子瑄毕业自华侨中学（高中部）与德明政府中学，在中学与初院分别修读高级华文与华文语文特选课程。她表示，自小在家便是以华语沟通，学校则为她提供了使用华文、华语的环境，使她对母语不会感到生疏。
语文特选课程让她有机会学习中华文学、文化。她在高一时也到中国浸濡，参观北大校园便是其中一项活动。
“许多在那里念书的学长与我们分享了他们的经验。我觉得北京是个很吸引人的地方，而且北大有蛮多新加坡学生，会让我较容易适应那里的环境。”
她说，希望借这四年认识其他国家的学生，了解各国民情，并且学习日、韩、俄语等。她也向往到西藏、新疆等地背包旅行，开拓视野。“我希望完成学业后能够参与国际国防方面的工作，为国家作出贡献。”
奖学金颁发仪式前天于淡马锡俱乐部举行，刘子瑄与另四名国防优异奖学金得主从国防部长张志贤准将手中接过奖状。其他奖学金得主都选择到英国与美国深造。
另外，有10名军官和见习军官获颁武装部队优异奖学金（SAF Merit Scholarship），当中有一半是女性。
海军见习军官陈信憓（19岁）便是其中一名得主。她说同学知道她加入海军，都非常惊讶。“尤其是男同学，他们都说能希望能快点出来（完成服役），问我怎么会选择进去？”
她在中学是学生警察，在初院便担任学警警长。她表示，自己不喜欢朝九晚五的工作，认为在海军部队有机会尝试不同性质的工作、扮演不同角色，如领导或发挥团队精神当一名队员，非常有挑战性。毕业自华侨中学（高中部）与圣尼各拉女中的她将前往英国华威大学（Warwick University）修读生物医学。
武装部队优异奖学金得主当中，有一名从警察部队“转投”武装部队陆军的“怀抱”。20岁的张智¤去年获颁警察部队奖学金，不过经过1年半国民服役后，他改变主意，在毕业后加入陆军。
他表示军官训练课程对自己人格发展影响深远，之后领导同僚的经验也让他学了不少。毕业自维多利亚初院与德明政府中学的他将前往加拿大多伦多大学修读化学工程。
